In an Emergency
1. Call the Poison Center Hotline (1-800-222-1222) if you or another person have been exposed to something that might cause an unwanted and/or unexpected reaction.
2. Remain calm - the majority of poison emergencies can be resolved quickly; over the phone
3. Call 9-1-1 if the person is unconscious or has difficulty breathing.
The Toxikon Consortium is an educational partnership between The Cook County Bureau of Health, The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and The Illinois Poison Center. Its mission is to provide excellence in clinical care, training, education, and research related to the poisoned patient.
Clinical Care: Toxikon medical toxicologists provide 24/7/365 medical back up to the Illinois Poison Center. They provide sub-specialty consultation services to healthcare providers across the state for the most seriously ill patients in their care.
Training and Education: Emergency medicine residents, medical students, and pharmacy students and residents can attend monthly rotations and receive in-depth education on the treatment of the poisoned patient. Activities include conference, lectures, journal club, case group discussion on common overdose treatment, and daily rounds on patients in the care of the Toxikon consortium.
Research: The Toxikon Consortium faculty and fellows are engaged in clinical and bench research to further advance knowledge in the field of toxicology.
